A question that is on a lot of parents minds when considering the pros and cons of cloth and disposable nappies

the biggest thing a parent needs to do when weighing up these options is look at the long term. Cloth nappies may seem like quite a large outlay to begin with but the savings really do add up

Cloth nappy costs: All costs are based on using nappies per child for 2.5 years (average toilet training time) washing every second day and line drying.

 

Initial outlay:

For a cloth nappy pack you are looking at around $500, this will provide you with everything for cloth nappying full time you will just need to buy a nappy bucket which is around $10 from large retailers (big W, K-mart etc.)

Washing costs:

Electric water heater: approx. $0.39/load - $177.93 Washing every second day for 2.5 years (warm water, including energy and water costs)

Total cost of cloth nappies for one child if you are using an electric water heater -  $709.85

Total cost for using cloth nappies on 2 children if you are using a gas water heater - $700.70

Total cost for using cloth nappies on 2 children if you are using an electric water heater - $919.70

 

Disposable nappy costs: Nappy costs vary greatly on the market we have broken costs down to 2 different categories, change times are an average from customer feedback.

 

Disposable nappy costs:

Cheaper disposable nappy brands (aldi nappies, woolworths select nappies etc.) average 30c a nappy

More expensive disposable brands: (huggies etc.) average .50c a nappy when buying in a bulk pack

Change times: newborn gets changed on average 10 times a day (0-3 months)

a baby gets changed on average 8 times a day (4-8 months)

a crawler - toddler gets changed on average 6 times a day (9 months - 2.5 years)

 

Total cost of disposable nappies:

cost for cheaper disposable nappies for one child - $1834.80

Cost for more expensive disposable nappies for one child - $3058.00

Cost for cheaper disposable nappies for 2 children - $3669.60

Cost for more expensive disposable nappies for 2 children - $6116.00

 

Savings:
